Peptide
Elamipretide is a small peptide made up of four amino acids. In the body, it targets the inner membrane of mitochondria, helping to prevent oxidative damage in nerve cells and other types of cells. It also helps stop mitochondrial depolarization, reduces apoptosis of islet cells, boosts islet cell production, and improves post-transplant function. Drugs based on Elamipretide have already reached Phase 3 clinical trials.
Function
Elamipretide is a promising new mitochondrial-targeting peptide that shows neuroprotective effects in models of neurodegenerative diseases.
